Last year the person I tutor applied for college but didn’t get a place. I really want to make sure they don’t miss out this year. What can I do to help them?
If you’re helping someone to prepare their answers, consider doing this over 3 or 4 sessions. Talking about what you can’t do on your worst days can be gruelling and sometimes emotional, so it’s good not to overload someone. Also, typing up some basic notes afterwards can also help to work out what’s most important, and how you want to say things.
This is a great resource and the downloads are pretty accessible: http://www.disabilityrightsuk.org/personal-independence-payment-pip
It’s also really important that you manage the client’s expectations: only 45% of initial applications are successful, so there’s a high likelihood of needing to appeal a negative decision. I’m really sorry that we’ve not got any dedicated welfare resources, but hopefully this will help.
Please don’t hesitate to give us a call if you think I can be helpful.
