Leeds Homes for Ukraine update March 2023

Resource Information

2023-10-13T12:01:41+01:0024th March, 2023|

[ad_1] Leeds marked one year since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last month, with hundreds attending a rally in Dortmund Square, a national minute’s silence and events at the Ukrainian Community Centre. Over the past year, Leeds has once again shown that it is a compassionate and welcoming city. Hundreds of Leeds residents have opened their doors to host Ukrainians through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, with 387 people hosting 749 arrivals either in their own homes or other properties they own. We must take this opportunity to thank everyone who has offered to help the Ukrainian community. Working with Leeds Community Foundation over £150,000 was also raised through the Together for Ukraine Fund. We are delighted these funds are being used by organisations who support Ukrainian refugees alongside wider refugees seeking sanctuary in Leeds. The Homes for Ukraine scheme is now entering its second year and we are looking for more people to come forward as hosts to accommodate a guest/s on the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Hosting can be a very rewarding experience, with many of our current hosts saying they have made lifelong friendships since they joined the scheme. There is support available for hosts from Leeds City Council staff, through the LASSN Ukrainian Hosting Project and other organisations. Hosts will also receive a thank you payment of £350 a month for hosting Ukrainian refugees, rising to £500 after their guests have been in the UK for over a year. Further information is available as follows: Leeds Asylum Seekers Support Network (LASSN) are delivering a Ukrainian Hosts Support Project, which is bringing together hosts across Leeds to meet and connect, share their experiences, receive support and other information. Please see attached flyer for more details and visit https://lassn.org.uk/ukraine/. Also see our recent Facebook and Twitter posts encouraging more people to sign up as hosts Further details about Homes for Ukraine and how to apply to be a host can be found at www.leeds.gov.uk/campaign/ukraine.
