Fundraising Ideas
Idea #1: Fundraise whilst you’re at work
A Locksmith, a Lock-Out, and a Lot of Heart 🔑
When Andy, a Leeds locksmith from Lemon Locksmith, was called out to secure a property housing people seeking asylum, he didn’t expect it to spark a fundraising campaign. But after hearing about LASSN from the police on the scene, he got in touch—and offered to help.
For two weeks, Andy donated everything he earned from late-night emergency call-outs to support our work.
We helped spread the word on social media and sent him some #SolidarityBadges and flyers to share with customers. His generosity—and creative fundraising idea—made a real difference.
Andy’s story is a reminder that you don’t need to work for a charity to make a big impact. Sometimes, all it takes is your skills, your platform, and a generous heart.

Idea #2: Arrange a gig

Music, Community, and £600 of Solidarity 🎶
When Dads Against the Machine put on a #PayAsYouFeel gig at the Brudenell Social Club, they invited LASSN along for the night.
Armed with a banner, badges, stickers, and donation buckets, we joined an evening of great music, generous people, and real community spirit. By the end, they’d raised an amazing £600 to support refugees and asylum seekers in Leeds.
Huge thanks to the band and everyone who donated. Events like these remind us how powerful grassroots support can be.

Idea #3: Fundraise whilst keeping fit

Big Hearts, Small Feet: Kids Go the Distance for Refugees 🏃♀️🚴
When Lamees (6), Bella (4), Maple (7), and Laya (3) saw images on the news of Afghan families fleeing their homes, they didn’t just feel sad—they decided to act.
Together, they took on an incredible challenge: to walk, run, and cycle 280 kilometres—the same distance from Kabul to the Torkham border crossing into Pakistan, a journey thousands of refugees have taken in search of safety.
With a little help from their families, they set up a GoFundMe page and started racking up the kilometres. Their determination and empathy inspired friends, neighbours, and even strangers—raising an amazing £1,360 to support LASSN’s work with refugees and asylum seekers in Leeds.
Here they are—tired but beaming—proudly holding their certificates of achievement. A special shoutout, too, to Charlie (4), Sophie (5), and Amelia (7), who were part of this brilliant effort but couldn’t be in the photo.
These incredible young fundraisers prove that no one is too small to make a difference—and their generosity will go a long way to helping people feel safe, welcome, and supported in our city.

Idea #4: Organise an office raffle

Promises, Pledges, and a Festive Fundraiser 🎄
Every year, the amazing team at Migration Yorkshire organises a festive fundraiser to support LASSN—and last Christmas was one of their most creative yet.
They hosted an “Auction of Promises”, inviting colleagues to bid on a brilliant mix of homemade treats, quirky skills, and kind offers. From a Sicilian lemon tart and handmade cushion cover, to a Thai cookery class and a morning of decluttering—there was something for everyone.
Here are just a few of the promises on offer:
- How to make and edit a short film
- Online Thai or curry cook-along
- Pilates or desk-based workouts
- Homemade samosas, rocky road, or a chocolate log
- Bee-keeping for beginners
- Crochet tutorials
- Decluttering a room (or garage!)
- General dog’s body work for a morning or afternoon
Together, the team raised an impressive £353.21—proving that a little imagination and goodwill can go a long way.
A huge thank you to everyone at Migration Yorkshire who took part. Your generosity helps us support refugees and asylum seekers across Leeds—and we couldn’t be more grateful.

How your fundraising helps LASSN
“We don’t turn people away.”
Mr Win came to see us last Friday. He, his wife, and their three children had just flown in from Hong Kong. They claimed asylum at the airport on Monday and booked into an Airbnb in Leeds, not knowing where else to go.
When he arrived at our office, Mr Win needed urgent help.
- His whole family had Covid, and he didn’t know where to get paracetamol or face masks.
- He had no idea how to complete the asylum paperwork.
- He wanted to know if there was anyone who could connect him to other people from Hong Kong.
Mr Win didn’t speak English. None of our team spoke Cantonese.
But that afternoon—using nothing but Google Translate and a lot of patience—one of our team helped him:
- Find medical, housing, and legal support
- Connect with the Hong Kong resettlement scheme
- Get in touch with the local Chinese Christian Church and Chinese Community Association
- Access some food and basic supplies
We don’t turn people like Mr Win away.
Not when they’re unwell.
Not when they can’t speak English.
Not when we don’t have a project or a fund specifically for their situation.
We help because it’s the right thing to do—and because, thanks to donors like you, we can.
While we’re lucky to get funding for specific projects like English at Home, this kind of crisis support isn’t covered by grants. Your donations fill that gap—and ensure people like Mr Win and his family aren’t left to struggle alone.
Thank you for standing with us, and with the people who turn to LASSN in their hour of need.
