Farewell from Anna – Ukrainian Host Development Worker
Over the last year we have connected over 40 hosts and successfully set up several hosts support groups across Leeds. Here is what some hosts have told us :
“Meeting monthly has lessened the sense I am on my own, shown me the availability of help out there and simply being able to talk”
“It was a safe space where everyone respected each others feelings and were able to speak freely without fear of being judged”
” The group enabled me to think about how best to approach the end of hosting”
“The groups allowed us to take a step back and recognise that as hosts we are only a part of the refugees journey and encouraging guests towards independence is also a part even though it felt hard to do”
Groups meeting face to face, online ,individually and through online information workshops have been able to explore a wide range of topics. For example : moving on housing options; rescuing/enabling – the role of a host; holiday arrangements; understanding trauma; setting boundaries and house rules; managing difficult conversations; employment opportunities for Ukrainians; ESOL classes; social events and many more.
We would like to thank all hosts who attended groups , supported others, shared invaluable experiences and made each other laugh.
Plus a huge congratulation to everyone who has provided safety, sanctuary ,support and compassion for so many displaced Ukrainians. You are all truly tremendous !
