The why of Free Teaching Resources

What is this project?

LASSN’s Free Resources is an online library of practical tools supporting refugees and new migrants to learn English, understand the UK asylum system, and settle in Leeds.

The library brings together ready-to-use lesson plans, activity ideas, and trusted guidance. As well as our Free Teaching Resources, it includes reliable information on asylum and immigration statistics, guidance on claiming asylum, links to useful websites, a comprehensive Volunteer Information Pack, and resources to help young people understand refugee experiences.

Together, these materials provide clear, accessible knowledge that strengthens support across communities and organisations.

Who do we support?

We support volunteer tutors, community groups, educators, and small organisations helping refugees and new migrants build language skills, confidence, and independence.

Many supporters are not trained teachers and have limited time to prepare sessions or navigate complex information about the asylum system. Without accessible, reliable resources, meaningful support can be difficult to sustain.

Our Free Resources equip people with clear, practical guidance they can trust and adapt to different audiences and contexts.

The support we offer

The library includes simple, flexible materials for one-to-one and small-group sessions, covering everyday topics such as healthcare, travel, housing, and local life.

In addition to ESOL materials, the platform provides:

Asylum Statistics – reliable data on asylum and immigration.

Claiming Asylum – up-to-date guidance on how the UK asylum system works.

Useful Websites – run or maintained by LASSN.

Volunteer Information Pack – essential guidance for LASSN volunteers in one accessible place.

Young People’s Resources – materials that help young people understand refugees and asylum seekers.

Resources are low-preparation, easy to adapt, and suitable for mixed levels. Guidance on boundaries, safeguarding, and trauma-aware practice helps volunteers offer support that is safe, respectful, and effective.

What difference does this make?

Volunteers save time and feel confident delivering high-quality, practical support.

Learners benefit from clear, consistent guidance that helps them navigate daily life and integrate into their communities.

We hope that our shared resources improve understanding of asylum and migration, challenge misinformation, and strengthen community cohesion. By reducing duplication and filling gaps in provision, the library enhances informal ESOL and community support across Leeds.

The result is a more informed, confident, and connected city.

How can you help?

You can help by using and sharing the resources, feeding back on what works, and telling us what’s missing.

Organisations can contribute materials or help keep content accurate and up to date.

Donors and partners support updates, translations, and new resources, ensuring the library remains free and accessible.

Every contribution—of time, expertise, or funding—helps strengthen knowledge, confidence, and welcome across Leeds.
